And the original crystal and brass candle chandeliers carefully converted to electric without sacrificing the original look and feel. And the sturdy but delicate woodwork throughout the house. They also comment on the stained-glass windows, inlaid floors, curved walls, decorative hardware, restored lithographs and wall-hangings, tall windows and doors, and antique furniture. Not to mention the equally-old fashioned hospitality and personal attention you don't find at many modern-day establishments.

The Historic York Inn / Smyser-Bair House Bed & Breakfast has left an impression on a good number of people over the years. It’s been featured on national television, including on HGTV’s If Walls Could Talk. It’s been covered in newspapers and magazines. And it is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

Enjoy a brush with history by paying us a visit. We’re open for overnight getaways as well as long-term stays for people relocating, on assignment, or in need of a home away from home. The wallpaper replicates that in a Victorian mansion in Walla Walla, Washington. A curved wall and two tall windows add character to this stately chamber. The room is decorated appropriately with amber-tinted lights and a wall hanging imported from Russia that features genuine amber.

This room is named for the original Amber Room in St. Petersburg, Russia, which was dismantled before the German invasion during World War II. Dr. Henry Smyser, after serving as a surgeon in the Russian military during the Crimea war, was decorated by Czar Alexander II in the famous Amber Room. The original Amber Room has not been revealed since it was dismantled—some believe it was taken by the Nazis, some believe it is in hiding, and others believe the bits and pieces have been disbanded and lost forever. But whatever the original room's fate, you can visit this Amber Room, once enjoyed by a man who set foot in the original.

The Groff Room

The Groff Room is named for Mrs. Groff of nearby Lancaster, the mother of Robert C. The most striking feature of the rich, blue room is the one-of-a-kind set of hand-crafted, gold leaf Pier mirrors.

An appraiser sponsored by HGTV said that the set of mirrors is literally one-of-a-kind. There is no other known set like this one in the world. Even antique Pier mirrors on display in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, Russia’s Hermitage, and Paris’s Louvre pale in comparison to this unique set.

The mirrors were commissioned by owner Henry Smyser in the mid 1800s and hand crafted in Italy. He then had them transported by ship to the United States. According to the story, gold from Henry's own California Gold Rush expedition was used to guild the mirrors. The mirrors also serve as drape covers and plant stands.

The parlor features two stunning marble mantles, an antique crystal chandelier that was once a candle chandelier, enormous double doors of heavy walnut with ornate hinges and door knobs, and a collection of art and antique furniture that is beautiful to look at and comfortable to relax in. In fact, it's easy to imagine Dr. Smyser and his family relaxing in the parlor, the candlelight of the crystal chandelier reflecting off the gold mirrors.

The Parlor was recently described in a front-page story in The York Dispatch as “a soaring room with sky-blue walls, flowing drapes over the windows and hand-carved mirrors leafed in gold Smyser brought back from his Gold Rush adventures.” The story went on to say that “The parlor could be the perfect venue for receptions.”

Come and see for yourself at The Historic York Inn / Smyser-Bair House Bed & Breakfast. Of German descent, he was born in York Borough on December 8, 1825, the son of Michael and Eliza (Lanius) Smyser. According to Historical Editor John Gibson in 1886, “Dr. Smyser is a representative of one of the first families of York County.”

Henry Smyser began the study of medicine in 1844, during which time he also practiced. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia in 1847.

A man with a thirst for adventure, Henry Smyser joined the Rocky Mountain migration and went on an expedition to California where he and his fellow adventurers struck it rich in the gold rush. He spent two years in California as one of the original “forty-niners.”

As a young surgeon, Dr. Smyser ventured to Russia, signed up as a Surgeon Major and served in the Russian military during the Crimean War. For his service to Russia, he was invited to the Czar’s Palace where he was one of the few Americans in history to set foot in The Amber Room – a chamber entirely of Amber with more than 100,000 pieces of amber inlay.

The Amber Room was originally commissioned by King Frederick of Prussia in 1701 and later presented to Peter the Great to commemorate the Russo-Prussian Alliance of 1716. Czar Peter the Great had the Amber Room reconstructed in his Winter Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1717. Then, in 1755, the room was taken apart and reassembled in the Catherine Palace in nearby town of Tsarkoe Selo (now the town of Pushkin). Later, The Amber Room was dismantled and hidden before the German invasion during World War II. Its whereabouts have never been publicly revealed since then. Shrouded in mystery, some believe the amber was destroyed or scattered during the war; others believe the entire room to still be hidden, perhaps lost.

There at the Catherine Palace, outside St. Petersburg, Russia, Dr. Henry Smyser stood in the Amber Room and was decorated by Czar Alexander II with the medal of St. Stanislaus for his distinguished service. He also received a second medal, commemorative of the war. After being presented with the medals in the famous Amber Room, Dr. Smyser was invited to join the Czar at the Summer Palace on the gulf in nearby Petergof. This was in 1856.

Dr. Smyser wrote of his meeting with the Czar in the Amber Room and the events to follow, “On Sunday the 13, we had the honor of an interview with his Imperial Majesty. The Emperor spoke to us on his entrance into the room.” At the Summer Palace, he “witnessed the arrival of ministers, chamberlains, generals, dukes, grand dukes, duchesses, counts, and all that follow in the line of royalty, glistening with stars, orders of diamonds, gold lace and embroidery to a very ridiculous extent although many of the court uniforms are exceedingly pretty.”

Obviously, the Russian Czar’s palaces left an impression on the young Dr. Henry Smyser, because it was a year later that he purchased his own little palace: The Smyser-Bair House.

His fortune made in California’s Gold Rush, his service paid in the Crimea War, his palace purchased, it was time for Dr. Henry Smyser to get married. In 1860, he married Emma E. Reiman, daughter of John Reiman.

But instead of living happily ever after, Henry Smyser returned to war.

In 1862, Dr. Smyser enlisted in the Civil War, then known as the War of the Rebellion. He treated soldiers injured in the nearby Battle of Gettysburg at a makeshift tent-hospital in Penn Park, just down the street from his home.

As a prominent man of high society, Dr. Henry Smyser would have been a man to meet for important visitors to York. It is likely that many of the high-profile individuals visiting York would pay a visit to Dr. Smyser at his home or office (one and the same). Rumor has it that General Robert E. Lee once visited the home. Charles Dickens said that the best steak he ever ate was in York, just a block away, and it’s likely that he paid a visit to Dr. Smyser.

Henry and Emma Smyser had two children: Ella Nora and John Reiman Smyser. John moved to Philadelphia, where he became a pharmacist. Ella remained in York and married Robert C. Bair, a lawyer and the son of a local judge.

With son John Smyser resettled as a druggist in Philadelphia, the house passed on to daughter Ella and her husband, Robert C. Bair. Robert served on government committees and was involved in politics, though never a politician himself. He worked as a lawyer, and also taught Sunday School at the Lutheran church right across the parking lot from the house, still in operation today. In fact, many of Mr. Bair’s Sunday School lesson books dating back to the early 1900s remain on display in the house today, with Bair’s signature and portrait, notes, and lists of his students from year to year. He served as Director of the Historical Society of York County.

Bair was also a talented photographer; the R. C. Bair Photo Album Collection is archived at the York County Historical Trust Library / Archives thanks to a grant from the Pennsylvania Historical Museum Commission. The collection includes three albums with 364 pages and 17 loose photos, totaling 721 photos focused on York from 1906 to 1928. Some of the photos depict Civil war veterans at the Gettysburg battlefield in 1913, some of whom Dr. Smyser may have treated himself.

Robert and Ella Bair had one child: a son named Smyser Henry Bair. This family, along with their servants who lived in the “servant quarters” in two rooms in the upper back of the house, lived in the home for many years.

Smyser Henry Bair married Alma Quickel, a beautiful school teacher. After a few years of living on their own, the married couple moved in with Ella Bair after Robert Bair died. Smyser Bair became president of the Gas Company, replacing their steam heating system with natural gas. The old steam-heating system remains as a relic in the basement today. Smyser and Alma Bair had no children.

Alma Bair was the last descendent of the Smyser-Bair family to live in the Smyser-Bair house at 30 South Beaver Street. She lived there until her death in 1979, and the home was left to the historical society.

In the 1980s, the house was purchased by the King family and restored to its appearance during the Victorian period. Tom, Nancy, Bob, and Hilda King opened the home to the public as The Smyser-Bair House Bed & Breakfast. During the 1980s and 1990s and even into the 2000s, the home operated as a successful bed and breakfast.

In the early 2000s, the home became a private residence again, until it was purchased by the current owners in 2007 with the intent to reopening the home as a bed and breakfast: The Historic York Inn.

The Historic York Inn / Smyser-Bair House boasts a rich history, and we’ve only scratched the surface here. In fact, the home and the Smyser-Bair family have been the subjects of a dissertation, and the home has been featured on national television, in numerous books, magazines, and newspapers, and has seen its share of photo and film shoots. A book on the Historic York Inn / Smyser-Bair house and family is in the works.

In recent years, guests have included people from Russia, Germany, Ireland, Italy, China, and all over the United States. Presidents have made plans to visit. The home was opened up to displaced victims of the recent Katrina hurricane, garnering a letter of appreciation from the Mayor. In 2008, Hilary Clinton even stopped by while campaigning. Not to mention an entertaining visit from The Drifters.

Ask anyone who knows the history of York about the Smyser-Bair House, and they’ll tell you exactly where it is, along with a story or two about its history.

The Historic York Inn / Smyser-Bair is on the Federal Governments’ National Register of Historic Places as well as the York Historic Walking Tour. It has been a preferred place for guests of the Mid-Atlantic Garden Show and was featured on the York Home & Garden Tour. The ornate detail in this historic home will take your breath away.

Decorated with antique furniture and maintaining the look and feel of a Victorian mansion from the 1800s, the home features well-preserved adornments from the past, including gold-leaf, Italian, handcrafted Pier mirrors said to be covered by gold from Dr. Henry Smyser’s own Gold Rush expedition, crystal chandeliers, hand-crafted ceiling medallions and crown molding, stained-glass windows with family crests, an antique, 100 percent porcelain sink and water closet, 9 to 12 foot ceilings throughout the home, hand-cast, iron window heads, stunning mantles and marble fireplace surrounds, a second floor balcony, and a beautiful mural out back where the stable once stood in the brick courtyard.

The home belonged to Dr. Henry Smyser in the early to mid 1800s and was passed from him to his daughter Ella and her husband, Robert C. It was owned by Dr. Henry Smyser in the 1800s and passed through his daughter into the Bair family. In the 1990s and early 2000s, the Victorian home was open to the public as The Smyser-Bair House Bed & Breakfast.

Viewers of the program will enjoy seeing some of the treasures hidden inside the home: one-of-a kind, gilded Pier mirrors, the elaborate parlor, an original crystal chandelier converted from candle to electric, a unique gaselier, and a signature in the attic dating back to the 1800s.

The crew came to film the Smyser-Bair House before the current owners purchased the home in December, so the program is already a bit of history itself.

The new owners have plans to reopen the home as a bed and breakfast in the near future. After all, it was on the front page!

The front page headline read: Couple opens B&B in the heart of York.

The story was written by Dispatch reporter Daina Klimanis.

In the story, Daina wrote about the owners’ not-too-long-ago visit to a bed and breakfast in upstate New York, and how the writer-and-artist pair thought owning their own bed and breakfast would be a dream come true.

Then, as though dictated by fate, they found the Smyser Bair mansion up for sale at 30 South Beaver Street – once home to the prominent Smyser family, then passed on through marriage to the Bair family, and eventually opened as a successful bed and breakfast in the 1980s and 1990s.

The Dispatch described the parlor “a soaring room with sky-blue walls, flowing drapes over the windows and hand-carved mirrors leafed in gold Smyser brought back from his Gold Rush adventures.” The story went on to say that “The parlor could be the perfect venue for receptions.”

The story described The Historic York Inn as “good news to the city's economic development office, where officials have long said a bed-and-breakfast would contribute to the city's tourism offerings.”

"It's an outstanding thing for the city," said Kevin Schreiber, coordinator of marketing and economic development for the City of York.

The Historic York Inn is proud to be an important part of the City of York!

Make The Historic York Inn a part of your next visit – contact us to set up a tour or reserve a room! Be sure to mention the St. Patrick’s Day Parade to reserve your room at this discounted price.

Learn more about the 25th Annual York Saint Patrick’s Day Parade at this link.

www.saintpatricksdayparade.com/york/index.htm

Email us at YorkInn@gmail.com or call us at 410-980-6747 to make your reservations today.

Stay in our Mansion for the Mid-Atlantic Garden Show!

The Historic York Inn is proud to be on the preferred list of places to stay for the Mid-Atlantic Garden Show.

The big event takes place from February 28 to March 2. But you’re welcome to extend your stay to enjoy other area sights and still take advantage of our special Garden Show rate.

The Garden Show features enchanting display gardens, thousands of flowers, a bustling garden market, workshops and free seminars, musical entertainment, and a Standard Flower Show. It was featured on the program “If Walls Could Talk” on HGTV on Christmas Eve. This was once a successful Bed & Breakfast, so it's well suited for shorter stays. Coming to town for the Antique Festival or Garden Show, or another of York's popular events? Let us know and we'll reserve a room for you.

The formal parlor is perfect for events as well: readings, meetings, receptions, gatherings, you name it.

Email us for more details. The mirrors also serve as drape covers and plant stands.

The parlor also features two stunning marble mantles, an antique crystal chandelier, enormous double doors with ornate hinges and door knobs, and furniture once used by the Smyser-Bair family.

Welcome to a Home with History

Welcome to The Historic York Inn, also known as The Smyser-Bair House.

The Smyser-Bair House is a historic mansion located at 30 South Beaver Street in the historic downtown center of York, Pennsylvania.

The historic mansion was featured on national television in December 2007 for its rich history and elaborate, one-of-a-kind features.

The home was purchased by Dr. Henry Smyser in the mid-1800s. It then went to his son-in-law, Robert C. Bair. The last family member to own the home left it to the historical society in 1979.

In the 1980s and 1990s, the Smyser-Bair House was operated as a successful Bed and Breakfast. Its success was due in part to it's beauty and history, and in part due to it's central location to York, Gettysburg, Harrisburg, Philadelphia, Hershey, Lancaster, Baltimore, Washington DC, and a number of interesting sights nearby, making it a perfect place for an extended vacation of day trips.

Now, The Historic York Inn is maintained as a residence as well as a live-in museum. Decorated with antique furniture and maintaining the look and feel of a mansion from the 1800s, the home features well-preserved details from the past, including gold-leaf, Italian, handcrafted Pier mirrors covered by gold from Henry Smyser’s own Gold Rush expedition, crystal chandeliers, hand-crafted ceiling medallions and crown molding, stained-glass windows with family crests, antique, 100 percent porcelain sink and water closet, 9 to 12 foot ceilings throughout the home, hand-cast, iron window heads, stunning mantles and marble fireplace surrounds, a second floor balcony, and a beautiful mural out back where the stable once stood in the brick courtyard.

In addition to being the residence of its owners, The Historic York Inn has rooms and suites, furnished and unfurnished, for rent to tenants who appreciate fine, historic homes.

There are a number of options in this spacious mansion, and all options include shared use of the large eat-in kitchen, sunken dining room, and elaborate parlor as well as the laundry facilities and storage in the 3-room cellar.

Annual, semi-annual, and short-term rentals are all available. An appraiser sponsored by HGTV said that the set of mirrors is literally one-of-a-kind. The mirrors were commissioned by owner Henry Smyser in the mid 1800s and delivered from Italy. Gold from Henry's own California Gold Rush adventure (documented at the local museum) was used to cover the mirrors. The parlor also features two stunning mantles and furniture owned and used in the home by the Smyser-Bair family.

The Inn is Open

Welcome to The Historic York Inn, also known as The Smyser-Bair House.

The Smyser-Bair House is a historic mansion located at 30 South Beaver Street in the historic downtown center of York, Pennsylvania.

The historic mansion was featured on national television in December 2007 for its rich history and elaborate, one-of-a-kind features.

The home was purchased by Surgeon and local celebrity Henry Smyser in the mid-1800s. It then went to his son-in-law, Robert C. Bair. The last family member to own the home left it to the historical society in 1979.

In the 1980s and 1990s, the Smyser-Bair House was operated as a successful Bed & Breakfast. Its success was due in part to it's beauty and history, and in part due to it's central location to York, Gettysburg, Harrisburg, Hershey, Lancaster, Baltimore, Washington DC, and a number of interesting sights nearby, making it a perfect place for an extended vacation of day trips.

Now, The Historic York Inn is maintained as a residence as well as a live-in museum. Decorated with antique furniture and maintaining the look and feel of a mansion from the 1800s, the home features well-preserved details from the past, including gold-leaf, Italian, handcrafted pier mirrors, crystal chandeliers, hand-crafted ceiling medallions and crown molding, stained-glass windows with family crests, antique, 100 percent porcelain sink and water closet, 9 and 12 foot ceilings throughout, hand-cast, iron window heads, stunning mantles and marble fireplace surrounds, a second floor balcony, and a beautiful mural out back where the stable once stood in the brick courtyard.

In addition to being the residence of its owners, The Historic York Inn has rooms and suites, furnished and unfurnished, for rent to tenants who appreciate fine, historic homes. There are a number of options in this spacious home, and all options include shared use of the large eat-in kitchen, sunken dining room, and elaborate parlor as well as the laundry facilities and storage in the basement.

Annual, semi-annual, and short-term rentals are all available.

In the future, the owners hope to re-establish The Historic York Inn as a bed and breakfast with an interest in preserving and sharing the rich history of the home. Until then, contact the owners for details on how you can rent a room, office, studio, meeting space, or arrange for a tour of the Smyser-Bair House.

Just email YorkInn@gmail.com
